Grade Card Update

Middle School Curriculum Update:  Grade Cards From Mrs. Engen and the Middle School team We have entered the realm of formative verses summative grades, and this transition has brought some questioning.  The predominant inquiries seem to be centered around two topics:  1.   Student and parent understanding of which grades on the school portal count for the final grade.  2.  How homework will be reflected on grades. It is important to the Sacred Heart staff that students and parents have full knowledge of how grades are determined.  We realize that it can be confusing to see formative and summative grades on the school portal and try to figure out how a final grade will be determined.  From now on, the only grades entered onto the school portal will be those that factor into a student’s final grade.  Therefore, teachers will only enter summative grades on the portal.  This practice has been done in the past years, therefore it is not new. Summative grades are thos

Formative and Summative Explanation

As a middle school team, we know this is new for all of us. Please let us know if you have any questions. In all of our classes, summative assignments are what transfer to the student's grade. Because completion is an important facet of a student's role, students will earn some summative points for their effort to turn work in on time and complete.   Info Mrs. Engen sent out earlier this week:  We are entering into our third week of school and teachers are beginning to put grades on the school portal.  Historically, fewer grades are entered the first weeks of school as teachers take time to build community, and set up classroom procedures.  More grades will be entered and updated as progress reports come out next week.  The Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas has set up our grade books to reflect formative grades and summative grades. It is important to understand the difference as the summative grades, which show mastery of a skill, will be the only grades refl

MTSS

Middle School Parents: We are excited to be implementing the Multi-Tiered System of Support (or MTSS) in the middle school classrooms. Many of you are familiar with MTSS as we have been doing in kindergarten through 4 th grade for the last several years. It is a multi-step process of providing instruction and support to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all learners. We will be focusing on the academic area of reading for this school year. The key components of MTSS are: Universal screenings have been done on all students. This data along with teacher recommendation was used to place the students in skill leveled groups. Interventions used to support the students are research based proven strategies. These interventions can be used in the classroom or in small groups. Progress monitoring will be done to each student to see how well the intervention is working. Your student will be participating in MTSS four days a week for 30 minutes. They maybe be wo

Tall Oaks!

Image
Well I think it is safe to say that Tall Oaks was a success!! We have all heard great feedback on the trip and a number of the students have said they want to go back...THIS YEAR!! I'd like to give a shout out to Peggy Kelly for doing the bulk of the organization work. She took the time to contact Tall Oaks from the very beginning and we all thought the day went wonderfully! Below is a picture of some members of the Seton house and Siena house working together to get everyone on the large teeter-totter. It took a few tries but they did get it! This picture is one we took before we left school of the Seton House. Go Eagles! Again, it was a great trip and we are already looking forward to going back! Have a great rest of the week! Mrs. Summers

House Reveal

Students learned their houses this year through an envelope reveal. 8th graders opened theirs first, followed by 7th and then 6th. The new members of the house were then welcomed to their new group. We look forward to a great year in house!

Interactive Notebooks

Image
This year, we've started interactive notebooks in both English and Science class. These notebooks are based on brain-based learning styles. The students use the right side to take more traditional notes, while they use the left side to make the information their own with illustrations, acronyms, writing responses, etc.  Thanks to all the parents who donated more glue sticks. Because there is so much cutting and pasting, we have been flying through them!  Below are pictures of students setting up their notebooks and some excellent examples of students Words About Me pages!
