Socratic Seminar

Image
The seventh graders did a great job at their first Socratic Seminar! We connected an article to the Holocaust as a way to kick off our quarter two novel unit. They did a good job bouncing ideas off each other and speaking publicly to the class.  \

Halloween

Image
We had so much fun yesterday! Thanks to all the room moms who helped put together great parties. The middle schoolers enjoyed listening to "The Tell-Tale Heart" and practicing inferencing skills. Spooky Edgar Allan Poe set the Halloween mood nicely!

The 8th-grade team did so well today! They placed first at the Bishop Miege meet. It was quite an accomplishment. In the championship round Working together Way to go!

Middle School Positivity

Image
Thanks to the students who became locker fairies over night! It was so awesome to see all the lockers decorated with positive messages today. I saw students carrying their messages around later, so I know the kind words made an impact.

Bag a Book

Image
I loved seeing what the students turned in last week. I will take these to Price Chopper soon to enter the contest. The students are excited to see if we will have a winner!

Class Update

Image
Last Friday, Siena did service for the school, and one group left this beautiful message from Sunday's responsorial psalm for students to see as they left for the weekend. "Come, let us sing joyfully for the Lord!"  8th graders had a great Socratic Circle discussion today on the state of education in the United States. Our Article of the Week posed questions about education, and it was really interesting to hear the students' thoughts. They did a great job expressing themselves and dialoguing with each other! I was impressed.

SCOPE Activity

7R, Here are the links you need! Ben Kamm is just one of the many amazing heroes of the Holocaust. To help your students understand what life was like for Jewish partisans like Ben, we've put together a  Guided Research Activity , which asks students to gather information from our article “Teens Against Hitler ”  and several other sources, including the  Jewish Partisan Educational Foundation’s fantastic website .  Jewish Partisan Educational Foundation: What is a partisan? Tear-able Puns

Image
8th graders enjoyed making tear-able puns for the hallway today. We had a good chuckle over a few of them! Here they are with their cheesiest faces.  Both 7th and 8th graders have their test tomorrow. We reviewed in class today with a Kahoot.

Personal Metaphors

Image
I loved reading the 7th grade's personal metaphors. They creatively described why they are like another object or animal. Great job!

Class Update

Image
Students have been gearing up for their figurative language test next week, which will happen on Wednesday, Sept. 28th for both 7th and 8th grades. They have all of their study materials after today. Both grades are also working on their Bag a Book project this week. I always love seeing what they come up with! 8th graders worked hard -- and had fun -- with their allusions stories! They were so excited to share.  Seventh graders found figurative language outside. One group had peace and quiet, mostly writing about the caterpillars and geese. The other group observed kindergarten recess, so their sentences had a lot more action! Both groups did a really nice job.

Update

Image
We've been busy this week in English class! Seventh grade students are starting to work with our figurative language terms. We had fun playing allusion Bingo the past two days! They know that they should be studying their words for a test on figurative language that we will have in a couple weeks. Eighth graders have also been working on figurative language in reading, and they will have a test in several weeks too. In writing, we have been focusing on subjects and verbs and how to make quality sentences with only two strong words. They worked so hard writing their two-word sentence prompts. The finished products were awesome! Allusions bingo Trying to guess the clue Working on our two-word sentence prompts Finished products! Here are some great finished prompts:
