Class Update

It's hard to believe that the first quarter has come to a close!

8th graders have been working hard on various items, like the Patriotism Essay and their research on refugees. We are reading the book Fish, which never actually mentions which country the refugees are fleeing from. Today, we practiced having a Socratic Seminar about the refugee crisis. The students' answers were really something:

- "I learned that this is a much bigger deal than I thought. I thought there were a couple thousand refugees. There are 12 million from Syria alone."
- "I feel so blessed to live in America."
- "We should really be thankful for everything we have."
-"We have to be kind to those around us who might seem different from us."
- "I'm sad for these kids. They have to be worried about things that kids shouldn't have to be worried about."

Students made connections from the pro-life forum and human dignity back to refugees. I felt privileged to watch them make meaning from the world around them and learn how to make their voice heard. They're excited to keep reading the book next week! We'll be reading Ch. 4 and 5 and continue looking at the lives of children around the world who face opposition, including a couple Scope magazine articles.

7th grade is working on SCOPE Magazine. We've been talking about and debating on issues like children participating in extreme sports and the amount of candy we consume. We'll continue with this next week and start reading the play, which the kids are excited about. One class spent today in a Socratic Seminar. I was really impressed the way students felt passionate about the topic and invited others into the conversation. The other class tallied up the books they've read this quarter. One student said, "This is the most pages I've ever read in a quarter!" Hopefully, this is true for others as well.

We also had a great time in House today. We played a game that kind of works like pinball. The students did a great job!

This picture cracks me up! Right after someone got out. We had lots of laughing and excitement. :)

Have a great weekend!
