English Update

Middle school families,

It's been busy in English class these past couple weeks, except of course with our nice long break last week! Eighth graders have finished part one of To Kill a Mockingbird. We've made maps to help us envision Maycomb. Scout's making us laugh, and Atticus and Miss Maudie are sharing their wisdom. Students are bringing items from home with meaning to them to put in their "knothole" next Monday. This will be a fun day to see what everyone brings. We're finishing up prepositions this week and will move onto compound and complex sentences next week. The students will have notes in their notebooks and their grammar books to study from! Next week, we'll have a guest speaker to explain more of our novel to us, and we'll be getting ready for our vocabulary quiz over words from Ch. 1-17. We've been back to our blogs -- which we were gone from for a while -- so be sure to check those out (see links tab above).

7th graders are halfway done with The Outsiders. They've been annotating and looking for literary devices in their novels. We are getting ready for our vocab quiz Thursday over words from Ch. 1-6. They've been working with compound subjects and verbs in Language. We loved hearing the details from their essays about the 1960s through their interviews with family members or friends. Thanks for helping to make those possible! Next week, students will finish their "casting call" projects, and we're looking forward to seeing who we cast in our version of The Outsiders movie. We'll be moving onto Ch. 7-9 next week. The 7th graders have also been blogging and would love for you to read them (see links tab).

Please let me know if you have any questions!

Congrats to Kane on his winning book cover, which we made in September. With 9,000 kids entering, we're proud of Sacred Heart!

It was such a blast to watch my homeroom during Catholic Schools Week. What fun! We're blessed to attend a place full of God's love.
