Membean is a critically acclaimed vocabulary program that will enable your student to acquire an advanced vocabulary which will aide his or her success both in academics, and future job career choices. As we end 2nd quarter, keep in mind the following changes:
•Late Membean sessions will have a penalty
•Any session that has a score lower than 50% will not count, and the student will need to do it over in order for it to be recorded on the gradebook
•Sessions done on cell phones, may or may not work. DO NOT DO MEMBEAN SESSIONS ON A CELL PHONE.
•Membean assignments run from Tuesday to Tuesday, and should be two separate 15 minute sessions a week. (Students have the entire weekend, plus Monday to complete the weekly assignment.)

What to Look Forward to in 3rd Quarter Writing
•Correct & Revise articles from Teen Magazines--first 2 weeks back from Winter break; putting closure to this project will include several reflection processes as well as a celebration, and a big reveal of all the magazines. Cross your fingers—everything wrapped up before the end of January.
•Writing projects for 3rd quarter will tie in with the novel seventh grade is reading.
•Quick Writes will focus on personal narratives
•Word Study of common Greek and Latin root words
•Common Figurative Language , Parts of Speech, and English Conventions

Faith Families

We're excited for faith families tomorrow! The 8th graders are doing a wonderful job leading. The 7th graders have also been great role models for the first grade buddies in Mass. They also had the chance to help the first graders to make their prayer books. It surprised them to remember that they once practiced saying the Hail Mary, which now comes so easily. Your student will be bringing home information about a service project that we are participating in as faith families. One faith family plays a game to get to know each other.  Each eighth grader helps lead about ten students.  Check out those neon prayer books!    Almost done!  Seventh graders and first graders hard at work.

Class Update

Last week, 8th graders worked on compound sentences. They made life-sized FANBOYS (conjunctions: For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So), which we're finishing up this week. They will have a test in a couple weeks. We also read "The Tell-Tale Heart," and Mrs. Kelly dressed up as Edgar Allan Poe on the same day! This week, we have started writing our National Novel Writing Month project, where students are trying to write a word-count goal they set for themselves. We're also finishing our read aloud, Fish , and tying in some SCOPE nonfiction text about refugees and child labor laws throughout the world. We will be starting Christmas Carol next week!  7th graders finished up a month of SCOPE magazine today. I loved seeing their play presentations last Friday. Their costumes were creative!
