Review for Figurative Language Test, Oct. 7th
*Students will be receiving this tomorrow. Seton and Siena students will receive it on Friday.
Format of the test:
-
Fill in the Blank: You have the definitions of
the 17 words on pages 24 and 25 in
your notebooks (8th) and 15 words on pages 19 and 20 in your notebooks (7th). You will be listing the word to the definition without a word
box.
-
Multiple Choice (Application): You will choose
which type of figurative language is being presented and what effect it has.
Ex: “Life is like a box of chocolates.” You would choose simile. Questions from
your Straight Ace practice quizzes will show up here.
-
Essay: Write a paragraph of six complete
sentences to answer what is the metaphor in this passage, why you think the
author used it, and what effect it creates in the writing. You will use
evidence from the text with your own analysis. You can also include any other
figurative language you see in the passage.
By Tuesday, I will need to see a study tool – notecards, make your own quiz with all the words on
it, etc. This will be your homework on Monday
night due Tuesday. For 8th graders, if you would like to wait to
do this until Monday when your Patriotism Essay is turned in, that is fine!
I wanted to give you this ahead of time, though, because
there is an extra credit opportunity attached. If you log onto Straight Ace
(see your notecard), you will see an assignment for this week (Oct. 1-Oct. 8).
Please do not click on the assignment from Sept. 2. We already did some of that
one! This week’s assignment has four quizzes assigned. Two are review, and two
are new. If you master each of the four
quizzes before the test on Tuesday, you will receive extra credit. Some of
these questions will show up on the test!
I finished with 100-percent mastery:
Level A: Figurative Language
Level B: Figurative Language
Level C: Figurative Language

Also, here's a link to a quiz that a 7th grader created. It's missing pun and assonance for the 8th grade words. http://quizlet.com/52399012/figurative-language-flash-cards/
You can also use the figurative language song to study!
