English Update

7th graders Skype with a class in Iowa for the Global Read Aloud. 

In 8th grade, the past two weeks, we worked on figurative language. Though students reviewed this last year, we refreshed our brains! Many of the questions from the pre-test were on the test. On their tests, students took a passage they had not seen from St. Therese and applied their knowledge of figurative language for literary analysis. 8th graders also worked on online citations for their patriotism essays, so we can avoid plagiarism.

We finished up finding subjects and verbs after working for several weeks and playing lots of parts of speech games during MTSS! 8th graders have been working on hard this week on their presentations of advanced parts of speech -- like participles and direct/indirect objects. They will be teaching the class next week, and I'm looking forward to it. They've also started the Global Read Aloud book for middle school, Out of My Mind. 

In 7th grade, we finished our ITBS tests! We also finished up finding subjects and verbs after working for several weeks and playing games during MTSS. Out of My Mind. 
They also worked on figurative language and saw many similar questions from their pre-test. As a start to literary analysis, they practiced writing a short essay on their test over a passage we had gone over in class. They also are presenting parts of speech next week -- the more basic ones: adverbs, prepositions, interjections. They had the chance to Skype with a class from Iowa for the Global Read Aloud book,

After next week, 8th graders will begin a unit on narrative and reflective writing. 7th graders will be working on their patriotism essays and how to recognize conflict in a story.

Faith Families

We're excited for faith families tomorrow! The 8th graders are doing a wonderful job leading. The 7th graders have also been great role models for the first grade buddies in Mass. They also had the chance to help the first graders to make their prayer books. It surprised them to remember that they once practiced saying the Hail Mary, which now comes so easily. Your student will be bringing home information about a service project that we are participating in as faith families. One faith family plays a game to get to know each other.  Each eighth grader helps lead about ten students.  Check out those neon prayer books!    Almost done!  Seventh graders and first graders hard at work.

Class Update

Last week, 8th graders worked on compound sentences. They made life-sized FANBOYS (conjunctions: For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So), which we're finishing up this week. They will have a test in a couple weeks. We also read "The Tell-Tale Heart," and Mrs. Kelly dressed up as Edgar Allan Poe on the same day! This week, we have started writing our National Novel Writing Month project, where students are trying to write a word-count goal they set for themselves. We're also finishing our read aloud, Fish , and tying in some SCOPE nonfiction text about refugees and child labor laws throughout the world. We will be starting Christmas Carol next week!  7th graders finished up a month of SCOPE magazine today. I loved seeing their play presentations last Friday. Their costumes were creative!
